The following historical narrative was written by
E. F. Denton of Toronto, Ontario in 1943.

Loyalist Fathers

Our narrative at this point brings us face to face with a movement of the greatest historical significance on this continent -- the American Revolution.  Almost all of us are familiar with its outline -- its cause, its incidents, and its results.  It can safely be said that no other event in all written history can compare with it in its interest to those Nova Scotians in the Western part of the province and to those of Digby County and the Brier Island Dentons in particular.

The American colonists who had left the shores of England to escape religious persecution, did not escape from political "persecution" which followed them to their new homes and remained with them for over one hundred years.  That is to say, England still regarded these sturdy New Englanders as her people and thought it only right that they should submit to her laws and at the same time, assist her to meet rising financial obligations.  Taxes of varying types were therefore levied against the colonists and various oppressive measures taken, despite the loud protests which they aroused.  The Friction between the two sides mounted, and while some of the ministers of George III realized that trouble was brewing and sought to annul some of the most troublesome restrictions on the New Englanders' rights, they were too late to prevent the flare-up of actual rebellion, which broke into the early hostilities of 1775.

The Americans themselves were split into two camps; the Tories, or the adherents to the Crown and rights of the British Parliament, were Conservatives, while on the other hand, the Whigs or the popular party, were radicals, and openly denounced imperial interference.  As is well known, the latter party was quick to gain control of the young country's destiny and in the resulting struggle with the forces of the Motherland, proved its mettle by emerging victorious and settling for all time the independence of the colonies.

To the Conservatives, the supporters of the Crown, the Declaration of Independence signed on July 4th, 1776, came as a distinct blow, and they found themselves in the unhappy position of being supporters of a lost cause.  Their own countrymen had turned against them; many were arrested and charged with treason and the remainder were made to feel so uncomfortable that abandonment of their homes for life in their native England, or in nearby Nova Scotia, seemed the only way out.

And so, historically, we are brought up to the point where we are witnesses of a mass migration of unfortunate people, who, because they stood steadfast in their loyalty to their Sovereign, were forced from their lands and driven into a country which could offer them nothing but bitter hardship, deprivation and suffering.  The courage and fortitude of these Empire Loyalists won for them the admiration of even their enemies, and indeed, of the whole world.

As has been intimated, Nova Scotia (which at that time included the present province of New Brunswick) was by far the most popular haven of refuge for the Loyalists, and all along its rugged coastline there were scenes of vessels unloading their human cargo.

"Not drooping like poor fugitives they came
In exodus to our Canadian Wilds,
But full of heart and hope, with heads erect."

The Spring of 1783 which saw the arrival in Halifax, Shelburne, Digby and Saint John (to mention but a few of the more important landing points), of many thousands of those brave people, was followed by a short summer and a long cold winter which resulted in many deaths before the aid promised by England could be realized.  The hardships suffered during these times earned for the province the name of "Nova Scarcity" and the coldness of its climate was said to be responsible for many "blue noses." Even today, the nickname of Bluenose is given to native Nova Scotians.

The crudeness of these early settlers' homes can scarcely be imagined.  At best, they were made of rough logs with bark roofs and oiled paper for window panes.  The most common size was 15 ft. x 10 ft. and boasted two rooms.  The furniture was for the most part handmade and its rudeness was accentuated by an ancient spindle or hand bellows which some of the more fortunate folk had brought with them from new England.  Clothing likewise was made by hand and tight knee breeches with large silver-buckled shoes, all made from deer skin, were the standard articles of apparel for our "Loyalist Fathers."

The name of Denton is not left out of the annals concerning the American revolution, for we read in Thompson's "History of Long Island" volume 1, page 222: "On August 11, 1775, congress was informed by letter, dated the 3rd, from Thomas Heime of Brookhaven, Chairman of the Committee of Safety of that town, that Parson James Lyon, Benjamin Floyd, Doctor Gilbert Smith, Joseph Denton, Richard Floyd and John Baylis, Inn-keeper, had from the beginning taken every method in their power to seduce the ignorant and counteract every measure recommended for the redress of grievances; damning all congresses and committees and wishing them all in Hell.  They had also been suspected of furnishing the vessels of the enemy with provisions."

Now, Joseph Denton, it will be remembered was the eighth child of John Denton and Elizabeth Kelsey and belonged to the fifth generation of the family to be born on this side of the Atlantic.  Our inadequate record simply shows that he was baptised on July 8, 1752 at Huntington, Long Island, NY and later moved to East woods and Brookhaven.  He married Martha Walters (or Waters) on June 9, 1776 shortly before the signing of the Declaration of Independence and was blessed with her steadfast support during the following thirty years which were far from pleasant for the entire family.

Joseph Denton, as one of the "Non-Associates" to the scheme of the rebels for ridding themselves of Imperial attachments, was soon to find himself held in great disfavor by his neighbors in the little town of Brookhaven.  finally, feelings became so bad that he and members of his family were openly attacked on the street by some of the more fanatical patriots, and as no sympathy was forthcoming from the authorities, it became clear that there was only one thing to do -- to join the exodus to Nova Scotia.  It was a heartbreaking departure in many ways -- to have one's best friends turn out to be one's enemies, and to be forced to leave the country which one had grown to love and which now was so hostile, was more than ample justification for heavy hearts.

It was early in the year 1783 when the unhappy family walked up the gangplank of the little ship "Atlanta" which was to carry them to more friendly shore of Britain's more faithful colony, Nova Scotia.  Joseph was but thirty years old and as he stood on the deck with his wife Martha and their seven children gathered around, we may well imagine his thoughts.   What was awaiting them in the bleakness beyond the horizon and was it to justify him and his fellow passengers for the suffering which had thus far been their lot for remaining loyal to a far-away English king?

We are not told what happened to the brave little party when their antiquated sailing vessel, buffeted by the gusty Bay of Fundy winds, finally sailed past the rugged headlands at Digby Gut and into the calm of the Annapolis Basin.  We can only assume that the landing at the Village of Digby was made without event and that the place of settlement for each family was assigned in due course.

To Joseph Denton, the finger of land pointing an accusing finger into the Bay of Fundy and known to us today as Digby Neck, seemed the most attractive site for his new home.

It was a picturesque strip of land, high and rocky, with the turbulent Bay of Fundy on its northern side, and the comparatively placid waters of the shallow St. Mary's Bay on the other.  What more likely spot for the beginning of a new life than on the quiet sheltered side where the waters of the St. Mary's lapped against the shore and found their way into natural little coves and harbors far along its thirty-mile length.

As we pause, we can almost picture Joseph and Martha, with all their worldly possessions stowed away in an ox-cart, and with the smaller children sitting on top of the load, as they make their way down the narrow bumpy trail, which many declare has improved but little to this day.  We can almost hear their exclamations and share with them their excitement, as, with the true pioneer spirit in their hearts, they press on Westward, eager to catch a glimpse of the land -- their land, on which they have arranged to settle.

To these tired travelers, it was a happy and eventful moment, when at the end of a long day's journey, they stopped in a little valley by the side of a small brook which wended its way down from the nearby hills.  To them, Little River was home, and they manfully set about their task of carving for themselves a brighter future.
