Mr. H. Denton Dear Sir
Peters (?) Landing, Perry Co., Tenn Aug. 1, 1895
Yours of July 10 to hand contents in reply will say that I will endeavor to answer all
questions and give you all the information that is in my power to do, in regard to the
Denton families in my knowing.
As to myself and family, my grandfather's name was Ben Denton. He came from White Co. Tenn
to Hickman Co. thence to Perry. He died somewhere about 50 years ago in Miss., I think
Marshall Co. My father was born in White Co. Tenn. in 1801, his name was Sam Denton, and
also my father's grandfather's name was Sam. My father left White Co. at 11 years old to
Hickman Co. thence to Perry Co. in 1817 to Cedar Creek, was the first man to build a mill
on Cedar Greek. He had 9 children, 4 boys, Abner, John, Ben, Isaac, daughters, Jane,
Milley, Sallie, Mary. I have 3 sisters living. Milley married one David Bunch; he is now
dead leaving widow, 2 children - Thomas and John Bunch. Sallie married John Bunch; he is
dead, leaving widow and 7 children, 4 boys and 3 girls, Geo., Howard, Wm., Jim, Mary,
Sarah, Martha. Mary married George Bunch; he still lives, has 7 children, 3 boys,
Anderson, George, John, daughters, Sarah, Jane, Joshua, Alsey. Ben (the writer of this
letter) born 1837 and now 59 years old, have 5 children living, one daughter Mary married
W. B. Gulp. R.L. and John are my boys living.
There was another Sam Denton who lived and died on Cedar Creek, was a cousin to my
grandfather and was older than my father. He married Eunice Conger, had 6 children, 2 boys
and 4 girls, Tipton, Elijah, Betsey, Eunice, Sallie and Tempey.
I have heard my father speak of "Big Jerry and Little Jerry Denton". I had three
uncles, father's brothers, Isaac, Jefferson, and Shipman, 2 aunts, Sallie and Rebecca.
Aunt Sallie married John Bird, moved to Bell Co. Texas and was killed there by the
Indians, was in command or bunch or soldiers in 1853. Rebecca married Ben Hensley, died in
N.0. with yellow fever about 1830.
I do not remember any of the Moores except James Moore and Bettie Moore (Bettie was his
wife's name). My father called her Aunt Bettie. She has grandchildren living on Cedar
Creek, P.O. address is New E ___, Perry Co. Aunt Bettie Moore has a granddaughter living
near Linden, Perry Co. married to a man by the name of Leghue Peavehausr.
There is also another Tom Denton living in this Co. His father was named Ben, P.O. at
Linden, Tenn.
As to your Uncle Sam Denton, I have told you all I know in the above. I will here state
who my father married, a Miss Argent Coleman; she was born in South Carolina. Hope to hear
from you again and that I might get up other information that would likely be beneficial
to you and that I might be able to learn something of the Denton family myself.
Yours,
Ben F. Denton

THE HUNT'S REALLY LIKED THE DENTON'S
From the family history of John Hunt Sr and his wife Mary (Overall) Hunt. Six of their children had married into the Denton family of James Denton and his wife Elizabeth Harper) Denton.
The first three marriages took place in Washington District, N.C. the next three in Bath and Fleming county, Kentucky.
William Bazel Hunt married 1st. Ann Denton 1786,Died 1787
William Bazel Hunt married 2nd. Sarah Denton 1788
John Tipton Hunt married Mary Denton 1787
Sarah Hunt married Abraham Denton 1793
Dradenna Hunt married Joseph Denton 1799
Deborah Hunt married Benjamin Denton 1800
Mary Hunt married William Denton 1799
The two families, Hunt and Denton had intermarried for the next three generations.
The families of John Hunt Sr, James Denton, and Col. John Tipton had moved from the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, to Washington District, North Carolina, about 1783. Col. John Tipton remained in Washington District, N.C. John Hunt Sr, and James Denton with all of their families moved in 1790 to Bourbon county, Kentucky, then to Bath county. The Denton's stayed in Bath county, while the Hunt's moved to Fleming county, living at Locust, Kentucky along the Licking River.
James Denton died in 1855 Bath county, Ky. Just three months short of being 100 years old.
